Phlox stolonifera 'Bruce's White'

Phlox stolonifera 'Bruce's White'

Phlox stolonifera 'Bruce's White'     New     Native     Z 4 - 8

[Bruce's White Creeping Woodland Phlox] I finally obtained sufficient quantities for both my garden and yours. Great little spreading evergreen ground-cover that is impervious to insects and disease, withstands drought well once established. An abundance of soft-white blooms on eight inch fuzzy stems waving in the winds of spring.

Transplant: White provides a background or holds its own, depending upon how you want to use the plants. I enjoy mine providing background for those darkest of color hellebore blooms. Transplants several of Bruce's White with chocolate-blooming Trillium vaseyi featured above the white and green.

From 5 pint containers.

Anemone nemorosa 'Pallida'

Anemone nemorosa 'Pallida'     Z5 -       shade - part shade

[Pallida Wood Anemone]  Foliage is the normal nemorosa leaves with a tint of bronze reaching a height of 6 inches or so, and forming clumps over time.  Bloom is in a light lemon-yellow.  Color is very soft, and pleasing to the eye.

Transplant:  Use with perennials blooming in blue for a pleasing contrast in colors.  Mine are with hybrid hellebores that bloom in slate/plum.  fall ship is best.

From 1 quart containers.

Delphinium exaltatum

Delphinium exaltatum     Native     Z 5 -     sun - part shade

[Tall larkspur]  The tall larkspur is among the finest of our perennial natives.  Unbranched stems each to 4 feet or more, with a slender, supple, appearance; but with never a need for staking.  Blooms are lavender-blue in abundance at the top of the stems.

Transplant:  Be sure and deadhead after each bloom period so it will re-bloom.  We have cut back twice and received three flushes of blooms lasting well into mid-December.  D. exaltatum is easier than home-made sin to grow, and far more attractive.  Consider Turk's cap lilies as companions, perhaps tall garden phlox, fall-blooming anemone.

From 5 pint containers.

Dicentra cucullaria

Dicentra cucullaria     Native     Z 3 - 7     shade

[Dutchman's breeches]  Ferny foliage and size much resembling squirrel corn at eight inches or so, often with a bluish cast to the leaves.  Blooms are white and shaped like pantaloons hanging on an arched stem.

Transplant:  Do plant shallowly, no deeper than just below the soil surface with lots of leaf mold or complst.  No more than just below the soil surface.  I like to place mine on good soil and simply push down gently with my thumb, then cover.  This native is early deciduous.  These small Dicentras are best grown in drifts between other plants such as Primula vulgaris and veris, and hellebores, our native Jack-in-the-Pulpit and Trilliums of choice.

From 1 quart containers.

Epimedium 'Creeping Yellow'

Epimedium 'Creeping Yellow'  (New)     Z 4 - 8     part sun - shade

[Creeping Yellow Barrenwort]  Epimedium are clump forming woody perennials which are invaluable to the garden when looking for a groundcover.  Creeping Yellow has foliage that is pale yellowish green just over a foot in height.  When emerging the leaves are mottled and rimmed with copper and bronze with red speckles.  With all the business of the leaves, the blooms come along to quiet things down a touch by being snow white with long spurs.

Transplant:  epimedium are easily transplanted and require little care in the garden.  The more light they are given, short of full sun, the more prolific in bloom and foliage, but they will also do well in shade.  Decent soil is best, but epimediums will take less than ideal soil and root competition from trees and shrubs.

Phlox stolonifera 'Blue Ridge'

Phlox stolonifera 'Blue Ridge'     Native     Z 4 - 8     shade - part shade

[Blue Ridge creeping phlox ]
Evergreen foliage stays close to the ground forming a two inch tall mat of deep green as stems ramble and crisscross each other. When in bloom plant height is about eight inches. Blue Ridge has flowers of good size, in very nice numbers, and of a deep blue with lavender cast in early spring.

Transplant: Mine is surrounding a June hosta and grows at the foot of an oak leaf hydrangea. Great with almost any yellow foliage, or with larger perennials having white blooms such as Trillium grandiflorum to quietly set each other off in color and form.

From 5 pint containers.
